Her Majesty's Displeasure as cloudburst drenches St Paul's Cathedral

The look of sheer dismay said it all. The Queen emerged from St Paul’s Cathedral yesterday to find the heavens had opened.

And while her tiara and ceremonial robes are certainly magnificent, waterproof they ain’t.

Despite Her Majesty’s horrified expression, a solution to the problem was soon reached.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were attending a service of dedication and thanks for the Order of the British Empire, at which 2,000 of those holding the honour were present.

Senior public figures with the ranks of Knights and Dames Grand Cross (GBE) took part in a procession at the start of the service, including the Governor of the Bank of England Professor Sir Mervyn King, former president of the High Court Family Division Baroness Butler-Sloss and the first Speaker of the House of Lords Baroness Hayman.
